I have already rented the boat, what should I include in my bag?

July 15, 2016

This is not an easy question for those who have never sailed before. We all know what to bring with us if we are going to a hotel in the Caribbean, but, on a boat the necessities are a bit different.

First, don’t even think about carrying a rigid trolley. It is very useful in the airport and it has a great capacity, but, what are you going to do with it on board? If you don’t want to use it as a bedside table, we recommend you to carry sports bags. There is a great number of brands to choose, but the most important thing is that they can be folded and kept in a chest or under a mattress.
You also have to take into account the period of the year in which you are sailing. It is always colder at sea than on land, so even if it is summer or 40 degrees in the shade in August and you don’t even happen to think about this, don’t forget to include some trousers, a shirt and a jacket in your bag for your night talks on the deck, especially if you are sailing with children.

It’s always recommendable to bring a waterproof jacket, since there are summer storms and one never knows when they can come up.
Flip flops are comfortable to go to the beach and we recommend you to carry a pair with you, but it is better if you can get flexible and comfortable footwear (like those we usually use to walk on rocky ground). This footwear will protect you against bumps and slips on board. Discard dress shoes and in case of women forget about high-heeled shoes.

The company has bed sheets and towels for rent, but we recommend you to use them only for the shower. For the beach, one towel per person is enough.
Don’t forget to carry a sun lotion with a spf of minimum 50, it’s very important to be well protected. On board, with the reflection of the white hull, the sun is very strong and many people can suffer the consequences on their skin. Therefore, sun protection, after sun lotion, and a cap or hat are indispensable. Make sure to take one that fits well, the wind usually blows them off.

And, what about electronic devices? A boat is not like a house, the energy resources are limited to batteries and if you don’t want to depend on them we recommend you to use the minimum number of electronic devices. Air dry your hair, forget your mobile phones and laptops and take advantage of the moment to unwind. You have the perfect excuse, you are lost at sea!
Charter companies usually have devices like routers for rent in order to have wi-fi on board.
